Ribbons Bows

What can be used to baste a turkey that gives the skin a deep brown, mahogany color?

I saw this in passing on a tv show and the bird looked fantastic, actually they put the baste on with a small paint brush but I never got to hear what was used to make it, any ideas?

I use vegetable oil to start, and butter toward the end of the roasting time. My mom used to brush the turkey with soy sauce before she put it in the oven. Then she basted as usual with butter and oil.
