Coral Reef
Posted on Friday, March 5th, 2010 at 2:51 pmwhat type of soil is beneath a coral reef?
what type of soil, like sand, clay, gravel, etc. makes up the floor of a coral reef ecosystem. i am talking about the soil that the coral grows from.
Corals love to grow on top of older dead corals!
The primary substrates are 1) hard clean rock or even steel or concrete 2) Clean loose packed sand or preferably gravels.
Clay...not so much! Turbidity of the clays in ocean water will clog their filtering mechanism and kill the coral polyps.
