Cut Outs

I've noticed alot of tv remotes have a rounded cut out on the back like it could be set on a rounded pipe. Anyone know? to make them lighter? doesn't seem to have anything to do with ergonomics because the rounded back shape seems to be just as comfortable.
It might be to make the cofortable, many other ones have it there so that you can lift the back to get to the batteries...
