Carefully. 
Try building or analyzing Lego cranes. Lego.com also has a crane for $50 right now. www.peeron.com has kit numbers and downloadable instructions for many Lego cranes. You might be able to find some of them on ebay. You may not need to actually build the Lego crane. Instead, look at the model, determine the major pieces (wheels, turntable, arm, etc.). Then, look at your bundle of pieces and make something with the same function.
