Pine Cones

I go to the woods to gather pine cones. I want to put them in a basket next to our fireplace. I heard that many insect nest in them. Is there a treatment sure how to get rid of these unwanted guests home? You do not want hundreds of spiders crawling in my living room. Yikes!
The answer given by Dances With Unicorns is what I would do and then I also want to give them a nice coat of clear spray varnish (available at most paint stores) to seal, thereby delaying a re-infestation or to prevent more bugs and spiders to move to them at a later date. seal them with varnish can also possibly kill eggs or larvae remaining insecticide left behind.
