First, fly rods come in many different sizes and lengths. Visit a reputable fly shop and you will get a "feeling" for the rod which suits you best.
Trout flies, like the rods come in all shapes and sizes. Some float, some sink and some ride right below the surface.
I personally like the mosquito, the renegade, a black gnat, a ant, the Telico nymph, and a brown hackle peacock.
There are plenty of flies to choose from, but these are the ones, on which I catch the most fish.
The mosquito seems to work in early spring, during the summer, and even late fall.
The more you learn about the fish, what they eat and the bugs available for them, the more fish you will catch.
A good way to select a fly is to examine the stomach contents of the first fish you catch.
Become a student of the fish. It will pay off well.
