How to make hair soft and silky?

I am Guyanese, so my hair is long, but I want it soft and silky! What I heard is put a lot of conditioner, use a good shampoo like Garnier and use virgin olive oil. Is oil really work? Is it Make Your hair soft and silky? Are there other options? If yes can you tell me them? Thank you!
