How do you clean dried gourds & how do you prepair them before painting?

I have large gourds that I have dried and I want to clean them before making bird houses out of them and painting them. The have green and black spots on them that are a little fuzzy feeling and I don't know what to clean them with.

Use soap and a brush. You may even want to use a harsher type of scrubby and or a bit of bleach in the soapy liquid. Let dry well before proceeding with your project.
