How can I wash a cross stitch at home without having my colors run?

I've recently completed a cross stitch baby blanket for the arrival of my nephew. However, he is due any day and I need to wash the blanket at home quickly instead of waiting on the dry cleaners. I'm scared to death that I will ruin this blanket if I wash it at home. Please Help!!!

I'd wash it in cold water with dark colors lundry soap.
