Cherries with several small pips??

A couple of years ago we purchased a cherry tree. This year it has produced an abundant crop of large Bright Red fruites. I recently bit into one of these and after swallowing some I noticed that it did not have a single large stone in it but instead several small pips similar to apple pips in appearance. Do we have a cherry tree or some other form of berry tree? We have young Grandchildren so is it likely that these berries are poisenous?

Hi Bob Definitely a Malus Ornamental Crab Apple and at a guess possibly Red Jewel. Grown mainly for the lovely spring blossom easily mistaken sometimes for Prunus Ornamental Flowering Cherry. The added bonus of the Red Jewel Crab is the abundance of small red apples in the autumn, ( Malus John Downie has the same but bright orange colour) which actually look like rather large cherries. The difference being that the cherry has one stone and the crab has pips. They are very acidic and can be used for jelly or wine making. Normally will reach approx 15 ft. Hope this helps. cheers Pendelli
