Why a single red hair growing on the top of my head?

My natural hair is black ... and I suppose there could be redheads in my family ... if I could have a red gene ... but the question is, why is it that only red hair grows and it is not as black as the rest of them?

It is highly unlikely that all the hair on the head is exactly the same color, there is a change in the individual component strand. Hair color depends on the eumelanin and phaeomelanin (pigments that determine hair color). Since we all quantities variables of these two pigments, it is possible that the hair follicle specific uses to which you refer more phaeomelanin resulting Red Color. Hope that helps.
