Turkey Quills

Do you trim the feathers alongside the quill or do you just trim the quill down in length?
Shorten the quills by cutting them about where the feather begins. Don't cut too close, because (much like a fingernail, hoof, or claw) there's a blood vessel inside the lower part. The quills are translucent, so you can usually see where the blood stops.
Only trim one side-- that throws them off balance so they can't fly. We tried clipping both sides at first, and they could still get up to places we couldn't reach!
