Yards Magenta
Posted on Sunday, October 11th, 2009 at 3:58 pmidentify flower that has 5-petals, lavendar with magenta stripes that grow very close to the stem. The leaves?
The leaves are larger than the flowers and remind me somewhat of a geranium leaf. The flowers have an indentation on outer edge like a dogwood flower, there is no fragrance. They (the flowers) grow very close to the main stem, maybe 1" stem off main one and then it flowers. There are always multiple buds on it, so it flowers a lot and also tries to spread a lot (like out into our yard). They just seemed to pop up last year I think and this year have been very prolific. They grow to a height of about 2+feet. straight up. No drooping of main stem at all. Also remind me of hollyhocks or rose of sharon blooms but are very small. Any help identifying this would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure whether to enjoy it as a flower or get rid of it if it's a weed!! Thanks!
sounds like you were blessed with Malva Zebrina.... and it is a relative of rose of sharon.!....
it's a lovely plant if you can contain it... in warmer zones, it will come back from underground next year.....
